It's not always possible to avoid stressful situations, as we can never sure about what life has in store for us just around the corner. What we can determine however is what are the ways that will help us to cope and nurture ourselves beyond these situations.
What are MY ways to unwind? And will I GIVE myself permission?
The response to these questions will be different for each of us and determining the answers may require us to try out a few different things and to pay attention to what makes us feel better, or more relaxed, and also, just as importantly, to what doesn't!
I know for me, yoga has been a life buoy. Yoga takes my awareness totally into my body and out of the seemingly endless conversation I may have going on in my head. What a relief! Regular yoga has become a strategy I have utilised not only to unwind after stressful events, but also to keep myself in balance so that future stress can be handled more effectively as I experience it. I am also aware that for some, yoga is their idea of torture!
Some people love to be constantly occupied, so to unwind they may like to be busy with an activity. For others, they may find physical exertion (or at least the feeling afterwards) to be their particular tonic. A more peaceful, mindful activity such as gardening will suit others.
The key to success is to be open to trying new things and finding the activities that work for you. And then, doing them! This can be the tough part.
